Mmmmm, Religion!

Not necessarily my personal thoughts on the matter of religion, a bit assish even for me, but damn does it present some pretty good points (and in colorful comic form).

If you're religious, let me know what you think (just try to make it better then "faith", because there's no way to argue that one either way!).

I'm sorry did I misread some of the text. Adam would you be kind and enlighten me as to what these points are that you speak of? All that I saw was twenty or so frames of ranting and raving that followers of religion are idiots and dumb but no real proof or halfway decent explanation as to why the writer believes this to be true. Now I don't consider myself to be a religious person but more a person of fact and logic so when I start arguments I will eventually make attempts to back up my point with fact not slander. If I add may that this person made the ever popular mistake of mixing Religion( a set of ritual practiced by may in praise of a common deity or higher power) and spirituality(the belief in a deity or higher power) which as I last checked are two different things. This is merely an opinion so do as you will.

This has to be looked at as it is, a comic. In a comic you cannot make perfectly formed arguments and you cannot differentiate religion from spirituality. So why make it in comic form? Effect! The simple umbrella statements are the most easy for people to understand and comment on. If you have a deep understanding of the subject you can make your own well planned arguments regarding it and if you do not you can comment on it as you understand it.

Wow. I'm not the slightest bit religious and *I* was almost offended by the blatant harshness of that comic, which is especially weird considering back in school I probably would have agreed with most of it.

My opinions on it have changed a lot over the last five years or so, they're not so black and white anymore. I still disagree with a lot of concepts of religion, mostly on the basis of personal morals and basic human rights in certain situations; but I also understand how and why a broader, more general idea of faith and religion can help a person and be deeply important to them, and I can respect and support that.

The point of an argument is to sway the ideas or beliefs of a person. If one leaves holes in their argument room is left for the interpretation of the actual thus making the argument void, turning it in to a random and somewhat empty statement, this exactly why I think the bible is for the most part garbage and that religion is a refuge for the mindless, unquestioning masses. I really don't mind that statements are made but one should be able to back those statements with a line of reasoning. I also must agree with Brenna on this the the manner that was used to present this argument was done in an insulting and off color manner which to me speaks more on the writers intellect then it does lend support to support to the overall message being conveyed.

Interesting. Definitely not unique, though. It's really easy to point at the "religious" and call them stupid for believing in a "big man in the sky." What people fail to realize is that science, in itself, is an imperfect science. There are holes. It cannot explain everything. Religion is very much the same. Really, the two cannot exist without one another. Personally, I have "religious" beliefs. That doesn't make me "ignorant" or "naive." In fact, viewing religion as something completely and fundamentally "wrong" and "stupid" is far more ignorant than those with, as you say, "faith." I draw my conclusions about my beliefs from personal experience and by education and upbringing. It has taken me a long time to figure out what I truly beleive, and after talking to a whole buttload of people from a bunch of different backgrounds and reading and thinking and rejecting ideas I have finally decided that it's not such a terrible thing to hope for more meaning in this world, and in this life. It's nice to have someone looking out for you. Really, Adam, and Mr. Comic, no one can ever truly determine whether or not God exists. However, respect for those who do believe in it is important. That's all I have to say. I will probably think of more later, but meh.
